Mainland China’s planning and construction methods for major new areas in Beijing and Hebei province offer valuable reference points for Hong Kong’s development and financing of the Northern Metropolis megaproject, the finance chief has said while meeting a top central government official in the capital.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, who led a 40-strong government delegation to the two locations, shared his takeaways on Friday as he wrapped up his trip to the Beijing Municipal Administrative Centre and the Xiongan New Area in Hebei over the past three days.

Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, met Chan and other city officials visiting the mainland as part of the delegation.

The other officials who met Xia included Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui Ching-yu, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah, Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn Hon-ho and Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin, the office said without elaborating further.

During a visit to Hong Kong in June, Xia told the city government to accelerate work on the Northern Metropolis by removing barriers.

Chan on Friday described the visit as deeply inspiring and said the two areas provided many concrete reference points as they both demonstrated a “magnificent planning vision”.
