Hong Kong is rolling out a series of discounts, shopping perks, giveaways and countless deals to celebrate the 29th anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese sovereignty on July 1.
To get you in the public holiday spirit, the South China Morning Post unpacks what is on offer, from deals on food and drinks to retail goods and public transport.
1. Someone mentioned food?
Restaurants are marking the 29th anniversary with a 29 per cent discount or special deals on selected menu items this Wednesday.
Multiple brands under the Tai Hing Group – including Tai Hing, Men Wah Bing Teng and Asam Chicken Rice – will offer a 29 per cent discount on all dine-in bills throughout the day.
Other chains are offering a 29 per cent discount on select special dishes for the day or the surrounding period. Cafe de Coral’s winter melon soup dinner set for two will cost HK$99.
At Spaghetti House, patrons can enjoy a 29 per cent discount when ordering any pizza or spaghetti dish throughout the day.
Oliver’s Super Sandwiches has slashed 29 per cent off baked potatoes and sandwiches after 3pm, with the deal starting on Saturday and ending on Wednesday.
At Maxim’s branches, patrons can get a 23 per cent discount on its baked pork chop rice with tomato sauce from Wednesday until July 5.
Mixian Sense, meanwhile, will offer its whole and shredded Sichuan peppercorn chicken dishes for just HK$71 on July 1.
2. What about discounts for shoppers?
Various shopping centres and department stores such as Sogo, Citistore, Apita, UNY and others are also offering shopping perks.
From July 1 to 5, Sogo’s Kai Tak store will hand out HK$50 (US$6.40) UCC Coffee Shop cash vouchers to reward scheme members who spend HK$710 or more at the outlet.
Members whose membership number contains the digit “7” or “1” will receive an additional HK$50 UCC Coffee Shop cash voucher.
At Citistore, users of its CU APP programme who make a single purchase of HK$300 or more at any branch will earn double points.
Meanwhile, shoppers at the Cyberport’s Arcade who spend HK$100 or more via electronic payment at designated restaurants from July 1 to 5 can redeem an MCL 2D movie ticket with a valid receipt.

Shopping centres operated by the MTR Corporation will also distribute 22,200 e-coupons worth HK$7.1 million, alongside other spending promotions.
From Wednesday to August 31, registered users of the MTR Mobile app who spend a designated amount at seven specified MTR malls will receive bonus e-vouchers.
At Wan Chai’s Lee Tung Avenue, members of its rewards programme can redeem one HK$50 dining voucher and one HK$50 shopping voucher for free with no spending required on July 1 and weekends throughout July and August.
The promotion means members can accumulate up to HK$1,000 in cash vouchers in total.
At Langham Place in Mong Kok, LP Club members who spend HK$500 or more in a single dining transaction will receive a HK$50 dining voucher.
Other popular restaurants across the city are also offering exclusive set menus with discounts of up to 50 per cent.
3. What are the transport perks?
The MTR Corp will also give away 71,000 domestic single-journey tickets through a lucky draw on July 1, and offer Airport Express discounts to holders of child Octopus cards, personalised student cards and JoyYou cards.
Commuters can also enjoy free rides on all passenger tram routes from Wednesday to Friday.
Several ferry routes will offer free rides on July 1, with vouchers for certain services to be distributed in advance.
4. What will the weather be like on July 1?
The weather on Wednesday is forecast to be very hot during the day, with mainly sunny periods and one or two showers, according to the Hong Kong Observatory. Temperatures are expected to range between 28 and 33 degrees Celsius (82.4 and 91.4 Fahrenheit).
