Hong Kong’s box office takings for first half of 2026 up 25% year on year
Comedy film Night King, starring Dayo Wong and Sammi Cheng, emerges as highest-grossing movie over six-month period

Hong Kong’s box office takings for the first half of 2026 rose by nearly a quarter year on year, with the comedy Night King emerging as the highest-grossing film over the six-month period.
According to figures from Hong Kong Box Office, 142 films premiered between January 1 and June 30, of which 17 were locally made. The movies generated HK$664 million (US$85 million), up from HK$531 million in the first six months of last year.
“The summer film season has just begun with many family-friendly offerings. The latter half of the year will also boast many high-quality domestic and international movies,” the industry body said on Thursday.
“It is hoped that the summer season and the second half of the year will sustain the strong momentum seen in the first half.”
Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association chairman Crucindo Hung Cho-sing noted that box office receipts specifically for local films rose by 40 per cent year on year.
“It really boils down to the quality of the films,” Hung said. “This goes to show that if there are good films, viewers will be there. It’s not impacted by the fluctuations in the economy so much as it’s an affordable form of entertainment.”
