Cantopop star Sammi Cheng Sau-man has expressed shock and disappointment after a stage glitch forced the delay of her highly anticipated concerts in Hong Kong at the eleventh hour.
The three-day event, scheduled for Friday to Sunday at Kai Tak Stadium, is the final stop of Cheng’s Asia Tour. It will be watered down into 1½-hour free appreciation shows at the same venue, times and dates, with ticket holders given the choice to opt for a refund or retain their passes for future dates.
The concerts would have been her first at the 50,000-seat stadium. The delayed event is also the first of its kind since the venue’s debut in March last year.
Media Asia Entertainment Limited, the show organiser, said on Monday that it had discovered a critical component failure during the testing process and stage set-up.
It said the team swiftly conducted inspections and sought alternatives but failed to find a solution in time.
The firm decided to postpone the event for safety reasons and to preserve the intended production effects of the concerts.
“After careful consideration, the organiser has made the painful decision to postpone the concerts,” it said.

A source close to the organiser said the show required a lot of mechanical support and Media Asia was working with the stadium for another slot to present the full version.
“We need to make sure safety comes first before anything,” the insider said.
In a video on Monday addressing fans, Cheng said she had learned about the postponement on Sunday afternoon.
“I felt shocked and, of course, disappointed, as not only I but also my whole team, my music company and colleagues have poured in much effort and planned exciting and fun content for the show,” Cheng said.
She said she first thought of her fans, especially those who booked flights and hotel rooms to visit Hong Kong for the event, which made her “extremely worried”.
Cheng said she respected the organiser for “making the right call” to prioritise safety, despite it being a difficult decision.
But with the venue, dancers and musicians still available, Cheng decided to proceed with the three appreciation shows as a “solution to minimise the harm caused to her audience”.
“We hope the audience can feel our sincerity in taking responsibility,” she said. “Once again, I feel deeply sorry for causing inconvenience to those who bought tickets.”
Hundreds of fans took to social media to express sympathy for Cheng, including those who had bought concert tickets and arranged for hotels and flights.
Facebook user Huey Cia said she bought tickets for the Saturday show and would fly in to attend the appreciation concert.
“I am coming from overseas and the process of buying tickets was not easy at all,” Kuala Lumpur-based Huey said, adding she would not seek a refund. “I can see your sincerity and will support you. The good thing is I can watch your show twice.”
Those affected have been advised to keep their concert tickets intact and monitor subsequent announcements from the organiser regarding the rescheduled shows.
