The Hong Kong couple who founded now-defunct chain store DSC were released on bail on Wednesday after being arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud.
A police source said police had received complaints from more than 30 suppliers and the amount involved was more than HK$40 million. It is understood that more complaints are expected to be made.
“The bail money was originally set at HK$500,000 each, but officers were told [the couple] were unable to raise such an amount,” the source said.
A police statement said the pair were required to report back to police in the middle of next month.
But it did not reveal how much bail money was paid.
Hui Ming-shun, 61, and his wife Lin Wai-yin, 55, left the city a day before the closure of the chain’s 14 stores that left 900 employees jobless.
They were picked up at the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan upon their arrival from Macau on Monday.
On Wednesday, the couple were escorted by officers to the DSC office in Hung To Road, Kwun Tong.
Officers from the commercial crime unit are investigating.
It is understood the Customs and Excise Department and Labour Department have launched their own probes into the company.
Meanwhile, Moz Lau Tat-shing, convenor of an alliance of some 30 furniture suppliers affected by the collapse of the retail chain, told Commercial Radio this morning DSC owed them at least HK$50 million.

Sofa supplier Wong Wai-yip explained customers could still collect their orders however, as DSC was merely a sales platform. He explained the income of the suppliers came from the charge at delivery after customers had paid a deposit.
“We would call customers and let them know goods delivery is still possible despite the demise of DSC,” Wong said.
His company would lay-off some staff members such as in-store promoters and transport crew following a drop in business, he said.
Meanwhile, HKTV boss Ricky Wong Wai-kay said he is willing to partner with the affected furniture suppliers and welcome unemployed DSC staff to join his company. He said he is expanding his online sales platform and would like to work with different suppliers and employ more staff.
