Two Hongkongers arrested after man throws crack cocaine from car when stopped by police
HK$220,000 worth of the drug, as well as methamphetamine, seized as part of series of anti-drug operations
A man and a woman were arrested for carrying a stash of drugs worth about HK$220,000 (US$28,000), after the man threw two bags of crack cocaine from their car when they were stopped by police on Thursday night.
In total, the two Hongkongers were found in possession of 150g of crack cocaine and 18g of methamphetamine. It was the biggest single seizure in a series of anti-drug operations that began on Wednesday.
Police stopped the vehicle on Ta Chuen Ping Street in Kwai Chung at 9pm. As officers were about to search the car, the man, 34, threw two bags of crack cocaine, weighing about 50g, from the car and tried to flee. The woman, 41, was sitting in the vehicle.
Police picked up the drugs and caught the man. Two bags of methamphetamine, weighing about 18g, were found with the woman and another four bags of crack cocaine weighing about 100g were found in the car.
Both suspects were detained for investigation.
At least five anti-drug police operations were carried out in Kowloon City, Yau Ma Tei, Yuen Long and Kwai Chung over the past two days.
Apart from the duo arrested in Kwai Chung, eight men and four women, aged between 23 and 61, were also arrested.
One of the men was found to have a triad background.
In addition to the haul from the Thursday night case, a total of 182g of crack cocaine, 53g of methamphetamine and 3g of heroin, estimated to be worth HK$270,000, was seized.
Drug trafficking carries a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment.
