Man arrested in suspected domestic violence case after calling Hong Kong police to report wife’s attempted suicide

Hong Kong police arrested a 39-year-old man on Friday after he called emergency services and said his wife had attempted to commit suicide at their Sha Tin home.
The 34-year-old woman was rushed unconscious to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin with knife wounds to her left wrist and neck. She remains in a serious condition.
Police were called just before 4am by the man, who said his wife had tried to kill herself at their Mau Lam House flat, which is in Kwong Lam Court, on Siu Lek Yuen Road.
When officers arrived, the woman was unconscious and a police source said the suspect “told police that his wife slashed herself in an attempted suicide”.
However, the source said the man smelt of alcohol, and blood found in the flat, and on his clothes, gave police reason to doubt what he told them was true.
“Neighbours also heard sounds of an argument from the couple’s flat before emergency services arrived,” the source said.
Police later reclassified the case as a wounding, and arrested the man in connection with the case.
The suspect was being held for questioning and had not been charged. Detectives from Sha Tin police district were investigating.
Police handled 1,394 domestic violence cases last year, down 9 per cent compared with the figure in 2016.
