Man arrested in Hong Kong over wife’s death after calling police to report that she had killed herself

A 57-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing his wife on Wednesday after she was found at home in Hong Kong with a knife wound in her back and later died in hospital.
Emergency personnel were called to the couple’s public housing flat in Nam Lok House at Nam Shan Estate in Shek Kip Mei shortly before 3pm after the man made a report to police.
“The man told police over the phone that his wife used a knife to commit suicide,” a spokesman for the force said.
He said the 40-year-old woman was found unconscious in the flat with a knife wound on her back.
A police source said: “Her husband was arrested at the scene after he later revealed that he injured her with a knife.”
The source said initial investigations found the man suspected his wife of having a boyfriend
The woman was taken to Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po, where she was later certified dead.
According to police, a 20cm (eight-inch) fruit knife believed to have been used as the weapon was found in a rubbish bin outside the flat.
As of 5pm, the suspect was being held for questioning and had not been charged. Detectives from Sham Shui Po district crime squad were handling the case.
The couple’s two sons, aged 10 and 16, will be temporarily taken into care by the Social Welfare Department.
Figures show police handled 17 reports of murder in the first six months of this year, a 54.5 per cent rise compared with 11 cases in the same period last year.
