A Hong Kong man is believed to have attacked his girlfriend with a knife before strangling her, barricading the door to their New Territories flat and killing himself, police said early on Wednesday morning.

The bodies of the 29-year-old man, surnamed Ng, and his lover, 25-year-old Cheung, were found in The Met. Blossom building in Ma On Shan on Tuesday evening, Sha Tin assistant district commander Chan Yan said.

Ng was believed to have hanged himself while Cheung was found with a six-inch cut on her face and other wounds on her back and arms. A preliminary investigation suggested both had died about one or two days before, Chan said.

“They had been dating for about two years,” Chan continued. “The relationship was currently stable and there was no issue with a love triangle.

“There has been no major discovery [on the motive yet] – we will continue investigating their relationship and personal finances to help establish the motives behind the case.”

Authorities were called to the residence by Ng’s family after he failed to turn up for a planned dinner with them on Monday to celebrate Lunar New Year’s Eve, and had stopped answering his phone.
