Hong Kong police were searching on Thursday for the leader of the Tsim Sha Tsui faction of the Sun Yee On triad following a spate of revenge hits on the rival Wo Shing Wo gang, including the recent knife attack on a Muay Thai kick boxer.

Intelligence indicated the Sun Yee On faction leader, known as “Lok Man” in local triad circles, had left the city clandestinely, according to law enforcement sources. The man is believed to have held the rank of “red-pole fighter” – a senior member who acts as an enforcer in the triad.

“Police will seek help from their counterparts in other jurisdictions to track him down if his hiding place is confirmed,” one source said.

The recent retaliatory attacks sparked local police to mount a week-long anti-triad operation, nicknamed “Levington”, since Monday night.

The source said the operation, coordinated with the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, mainly targeted the entertainment venues controlled by the two triad gangs in the busy entertainment district of Tsim Sha Tsui.

He said more than 100 officers including Police Tactical Unit personnel were deployed each night to carry out licence checks at the targeted venues.
