Hong Kong woman Amina Bokhary arrested after parents accuse her of assault

  • She was placed on a wanted list after skipping a bail hearing in February

A Hong Kong woman who has gained citywide notoriety for her family name and past brushes with the law was arrested again on Sunday, after her parents reported her to the police for assault.

Amina Mariam Bokhary, 42, the niece of Court of Final Appeal judge Kemal Bokhary, had failed to report to police for a bail hearing on February 15, following her earlier arrest for driving with a suspended licence and without third-party insurance, it was revealed on Thursday.

Her parents filed a complaint at a police station on Sunday morning and officers returned with her father to the family home in Shiu Fai Terrace on Stubbs Road, Happy Valley, and arrested Bokhary, a police source said.

Bokhary appeared emotional, prompting officers to restrain her and take her to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai.

On January 31, she was pulled over on King Kwong Street in Happy Valley after a police patrol team saw her car cruising in an erratic manner. She was arrested for driving with a suspended licence and without third-party insurance.

This stemmed from a previous brush with the law in 2010, when she committed another driving offence that caused her licence to be revoked for three years.

Bokhary was required at the time to take a driving course before she could drive again, but never did so, according to police sources.

She was released on bail and told to report back on February 15 but did not show up. Police put her on a wanted list last week.

Bokhary has experienced several brushes with the law.

In 2010, she slapped an officer while refusing to take a breathalyser test after an accident on Stubbs Road.

In December 2008, Bokhary was ordered to perform 240 hours of community service and fined HK$1,000 for assaulting a policewoman and a taxi driver. In 2002, she was fined HK$9,000 for assaulting a policeman and damaging a spotlight outside a Central bar.

In all three cases, she was spared jail by magistrates who gave her non-custodial sentences, sparking a public outcry and accusations the courts showed leniency to well-connected defendants.

One of the probation conditions in 2010 was that she would spend three months at the Betty Ford Centre for alcohol rehabilitation in California, but she left after 78 days.

The breaches prompted the Eastern Court to change her sentence to six weeks in jail. She was freed after serving two-thirds of the sentence.
