Five people have been arrested and two air pistols seized in connection with a case in which a mainland Chinese man was wounded in a fight on a busy Hong Kong street last week.

On Monday officers apprehended a suspected triad member behind the attack on the mainlander, 33, over a monetary dispute. The weapon used in the incident was a rebound hammer loaded with pellets.

Police are still looking for the hammer.

A law enforcement source said initial investigations showed the row erupted after one of the suspects was accused of cheating in a gambling den in Sham Shui Po on Friday. He added police believed the mainland man operated the den and held a two-way permit, a travel document for entering Hong Kong.

The brawl broke out at 10.18pm on Friday when the two men met on Cheung Sha Wan Road near the junction with Kweilin Street.

The mainland man was shot in the upper right arm with the tool when he allegedly used a section of pipe to attack his opponent, who was later seen fleeing with another man.

Soon after the clash, the injured man went to Caritas Medical Centre in the same district to seek treatment. He was later transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung, where he remained on Monday.
