Hong Kong police have seized HK$20 million (US$2.55 million) worth of drugs in Tseung Kwan O after ambushing a 28-year-old man outside a public housing flat.

Officers apprehended the suspect at King Min House in King Lam Estate on Thursday and found about 1.5kg of suspected heroin in his bag.

Another 4.5kg of the drug was discovered inside the flat along with 38kg of cannabis, tools to package the drugs and plastic containers previously used for supplements.

Chief Inspector Cheung Ting-fung from the Tseung Kwan O district crime squad said the jobless man rented one of five subdivided units that made up the flat. It had been used as a storage and distribution centre for two weeks, officers said. The man, from Hong Kong, was detained.
