Police were called to a luxury home in an exclusive area of Hong Kong on Thursday to investigate a burglary in which an entire safe was stolen.

Officers were called to Deep Water Bay Road after receiving a report of a break-in from a security guard soon before 11.30am. Police could not determine what valuables were in the safe because the tenants were out of town.

A police spokesman said the guard was alerted by a domestic helper who found that a safe hidden in a bedroom wardrobe had gone missing. The safe was said to be 60cm tall and 60cm wide, and the home was reportedly in the midst of an interior renovation.

Officers said they would investigate CCTV footage to gather evidence. Detectives from Western criminal investigation unit were assigned to handle the case.

The break-in was the second burglary on the same road in four months. On April 29, valuables worth HK$400,000 (US$51,000) were stolen from two safes that were prised open in another home on Deep Water Bay Road when the tenants were on holiday in Europe.

According to police, there were 786 reports of burglary in the first six months of 2019, down 2.7 per cent from 808 in the same period of 2018.

Numerous break-ins have been reported in upmarket areas such as The Peak, Repulse Bay, Kowloon Tong and Deep Water Bay in recent years.

In October, a burglary was foiled at the home of Arthur Kwok Chi-shun, the former commander of the Auxiliary Police Force, on The Peak. The robber set off a security alarm and fled without stealing anything.

Separately, officers on Thursday were called to a 23rd-floor flat at Kam Lan House in Kam Fung Court on Sai Sha Road in Ma On Shan after receiving a report of burglary soon before 8am.

According to police, HK$138,000 in cash and valuables were stolen from a drawer that was broken into. Officers from the Sha Tin criminal investigation unit were investigating but no arrests had been made.
