Woman, 21, hit and killed by bus in Hong Kong

  • Student was crossing the road when the Cyberport-bound double-decker smashed into her. She died later in hospital
  • The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving

A Hong Kong bus driver was arrested after his double-decker hit and killed a 21-year-old woman in Pok Fu Lam on Monday.

The smash happened at 10.19am, when the woman was crossing Pok Fu Lam Road.

She was thrown a few metres by the impact when she was hit by the Cyberport-bound 30X bus, according to a police source. The windscreen of the bus was also smashed.

The woman – understood to have been a student at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, on her way to its nearby Bethanie campus – suffered serious head injuries and was unconscious when emergency services arrived.

She was taken to the nearby Queen Mary Hospital, where she was declared dead shortly before 11.30am.

Police arrested the 61-year-old driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.

As of 1pm, the man was still being held for questioning and had not been charged.

A spokesman for New World First Bus, which ran the service, said the driver would be suspended from driving pending the results of an investigation.

The driver, who had started his shift at 6.40am on Monday, joined the company in 1998 and drove the route regularly, he said.

The company expressed sadness over the accident, and sent condolences to the family of the deceased.

“The company will fully cooperate with police to investigate the cause of the accident,” the spokesman said.

It was the city’s second fatal accident involving a bus in six days. Last Tuesday, a 90-year-old man died in hospital less than 12 hours after he was hit unconscious by a bus at the junction of Cheung Sha Wan Road and Tonkin Street in Cheung Sha Wan at about 9.15am. Police arrested the driver, 64, for dangerous driving causing death.

Latest figures show 55 people died in 54 road traffic accidents across the city in the first seven months of this year.
