Woman dies in Hong Kong hospital after falling off minibus

  • Elderly woman lost her balance and fell off a minibus while alighting on Hoi Wang Road in Yau Ma Tei on Thursday
  • She was taken unconscious to Kwong Wah Hospital, where she died on Friday morning

A 78-year-old woman died in a Hong Kong hospital on Friday less than 24 hours after she fell off a minibus.

The Mong Kok-bound minibus stopped on Hoi Wang Road, Yau Ma Tei, for passengers to get off when the incident occurred soon after 1pm on Thursday.

“The minibus was suspected to have moved forward when the woman was alighting the vehicle,” a police spokesman said.

Police said the woman lost her balance and fell off the minibus.

She suffered injuries to her head and was taken unconscious to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei.

Three killed, three injured in separate crashes on Hong Kong streets

A government spokesman said she died in the hospital at 10.43am on Friday.

The minibus driver – a 71-year-old man – who passed a breathalyser test, was arrested for dangerous driving on Thursday after the incident.

He had been released on bail pending further investigation. He is required to report to police in mid-May.

Officers from the Kowloon West traffic unit are handling the case.

Police figures show 32 people died in 31 road accidents in the city in the first three months of 2020.

In 2019, some 113 people died in 107 accidents. Last December, six passengers were killed and 39 injured after a double-decker bus ploughed into a roadside tree in Sheung Shui. The impact ripped away most of its roof.
