Elderly Hong Kong man dies when tin shack catches fire

  • The victim was in his 60s and declared dead at Tin Sam Village, while two neighbours sent to hospital
  • First responders evacuated about 30 residents from area, which was engulfed in black smoke

An elderly man died when his tin shack caught fire in northern Hong Kong on Monday, with two neighbours also requiring hospital treatment.

According to the police, the man was in his 60s and was certified dead at the scene.

First responders arrived at Tin Sam Village on Tin Sam Tin Ha Road in Tin Shui Wai after police received multiple reports of a fire at 12.49pm. Pictures posted online showed the area engulfed in black smoke. The Fire Services Department mobilised two teams with breathing equipment.

“Rescuers evacuated around 30 residents from the village,” a police spokeswoman said. “A couple, who lives next to the deceased man, were sent to Tuen Mun Hospital after the husband injured his face and leg, while the wife fell ill due to smoke inhalation.”

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
