Hong Kong Labour Department launches probe into construction site accident that killed one, injured five

- Six injured were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei and United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, where one later died
Hong Kong’s Labour Department has launched an investigation into an accident at a construction site that left one worker dead and five injured following the collapse of a platform.
Emergency personnel were called to the site at the junction of Shing Kai Road and Sung Wong Toi Road in Kai Tak soon after 3pm on Tuesday after police received the report of an industrial accident.
The accident happened at an underground tunnel and road construction site.
According to police, two bar benders, including a 51-year-old man who was killed, were working on a two-metre-tall platform when it collapsed. The platform was made of 300 metal bars weighing more than 20 tonnes.

“All of a sudden, the platform collapsed and the two workers fell to the ground, and were buried under those metal bars,” a police source said.
He said some poles from the collapsed platform also hit four others who were working underneath the platform.
The six men, aged 30 to 59, were taken to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for treatment.

A police spokesman said the 51-year-old man, who had lost consciousness after the fall, later died in United Christian Hospital.
He said the Labour Department was notified of the accident.
“The Labour Department immediately deployed its workers to the scene upon receiving a report of the accident and is now conducting an investigation to look into its cause,” the department said in a statement.
