A motorcyclist was killed in a crash and two men were sent to hospital after a tree toppled over, in separate accidents on Hong Kong’s roads on Thursday.

Police said a 50-year-old man died after a collision between his motorbike and a truck in the Mid-Levels area of Central just before 9.30am.

According to the force, the man was trapped under the truck after the crash on Borrett Road, near the junction with Bowen Road. He was sent unconscious to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai, where he later died.

Police arrested the truck driver, 69, on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. As of Thursday afternoon, the man was still being held for questioning and had not been charged.

Earlier, a 10-metre-tall tree fell and hit three vehicles, including a double-decker bus, in the western part of Hong Kong Island, putting two men in hospital.

Emergency personnel were called around 7.15am after the incident on Pok Fu Lam Road, near Pokfield Road.

Police said the tree hit a New World First Bus vehicle, a minibus, and a taxi, smashing the windscreens of the first two.

A police spokesman said a taxi driver, 40, suffered a leg injury, and a 66-year-old bus passenger complained of neck pain. The pair were sent to nearby Queen Mary Hospital for treatment.

Because of the fallen tree, a section of the road heading towards Aberdeen was briefly closed to traffic, and a two-way traffic arrangement on one lane was put in place on the Central-bound carriageway, according to the Transport Department.

Firefighters cut up the tree with electric saws and workers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department removed debris. The road reopened at 9am.

Police figures show 75 people died in 74 road traffic accidents across the city in the first eight months of this year. In 2019, 113 people died in 107 traffic accidents.
