Security around Hong Kong police facilities will be heightened, force insiders have said, after its sports club was attacked with nine petrol bombs, in the first such incident since the imposition of the national security law in June.

The bombs were hurled into the car park of the Police Sports and Recreation Club in Sham Shui Po around 1am, causing extensive damage to a vehicle and triggering a manhunt for three black-clad perpetrators.

Security cameras captured three masked men hurling nine petrol bombs from a path on a hillside off Sai Yeung Choi Street North into the car park around 1.13am, a police source said. The venue is about 300 metres from Mong Kok Police Station.

“One of the petrol bombs failed to explode, but the others badly damaged a parked truck,” the source said, adding the entire attack lasted less than 30 seconds.

An initial investigation showed the three attackers entered the path from Tong Yam Street near Tai Hang Tung Recreation Ground in Shek Kip Mei. “After the attack, they ran into Sai Yeung Choi Street North, fleeing towards Tai Po Road,” he said.
