A Hongkonger suspected of driving under the influence of an illegal drug was arrested early on Tuesday following a 4km high-speed chase that ended down a dead-end street.
The 31-year-old was driving his white Honda along Prince Edward Road East in San Po Kong at 11.55pm on Monday when officers in a patrol car using number plate recognition technology found the vehicle licence had expired.
The pursuit began when the driver ignored their orders to pull over and sped off, according to police.
During the chase, the Honda was driven at high speed eastbound along Prince Edward Road East before turning into Lung Cheung Road and then Clear Water Bay Road. The vehicle then went down a cul-de-sac outside Ngau Chi Wan Park.
Blocked in by police vehicles, the driver jumped from the car to try and escape. His vehicle rolled backwards and hit a stationary car. After a brief chase on foot, officers stopped and subdued the suspect.
“Officers seized 15 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of about HK$9,800 [US$1,256] from the driver,” police said in a statement.
According to the force, the man also failed a rapid oral fluid test that was introduced in February to catch those driving under the influence of illegal narcotics.
A sniffer dog was deployed at the scene, but no further drugs were found in the car. No one was injured in the incident.
