Police were called to an upscale Hong Kong housing estate on Tuesday night after a flat there was robbed of some HK$900,000 (US$115,891) in cash and valuables.

The break-in came to light at about 10.17pm on Tuesday when a 58-year-old man and his wife returned to their seventh-floor home at South Bay Towers in Repulse Bay and found it had been ransacked.

“Initial investigation shows five watches and some jewellery were stolen, along with HK$150,000 in local and foreign currency. The haul was estimated to have amounted to about HK$900,000 in total,” the police force said in a statement.

It is understood that one of the watches alone was worth about HK$160,000, and that the stolen jewellery included several diamond rings.

Officers said they believed the valuables and cash were taken from a safe and some drawers in the master bedroom.
