80-year-old Hong Kong man struck by falling tree branch at bird garden

An elderly Hongkonger escaped serious injury on Tuesday when an eight-metre-long branch fell from a flame tree and landed on his back at a popular Mong Kok bird garden.

Emergency services were called to the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden just after 8.15am when police received a call from the 80-year-old victim.

According to the force, the man was standing under the 13-metre-tall tree holding a cage containing his pet bird when the branch fell.

The park is a popular gathering spot for bird enthusiasts, who often bring along their pets.

“The branch, which was about eight metres in length, suddenly collapsed from the tree and hit the man’s back,” a police spokeswoman said.
