Hong Kong taxi driver in Tai Po crash that killed 2 charged with dangerous driving causing death

  • The 63-year-old cabby is accused of running a red light before ploughing into a crowd of pedestrians at a busy crossing on Kwong Fuk Road

The driver of a taxi that ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians at a busy crossing in Tai Po on Sunday – killing two people and injuring seven – has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.

Mok Pui-wa, 63, stands accused of causing the death of 59-year-old Cheng Kwan-hoi while behind the wheel of his cab on Kwong Fuk Road on Sunday morning.

The driver was not present when the case was heard at Fanling Court on Tuesday afternoon. Court prosecutor Alan Yau Sik-lun said Mok was still in hospital due to a fever.

Magistrate Raymond Wong Kwok-fai adjourned the case to Friday pending Mok’s discharge and ordered the driver to remain in police custody.

While Tuesday’s charge concerned only the first fatality tied to the crash, the prosecutor said outside court there could be additional charges depending on future developments.

The crash has also claimed the life of a 63-year-old woman, who died in Tuen Mun Hospital on Monday morning.

As of Tuesday morning, four people, including a four-year-old boy in critical condition, remained in Prince of Wales Hospital, according to the Hospital Authority.

The three others in hospital are: the boy’s 37-year old pregnant mother, a 51-year-old woman and the taxi driver. All are in stable condition.

A crowd of about 20 passers-by was seen rushing to the taxi in the aftermath of the crash on Sunday, working together to lift the vehicle and free at least two victims trapped underneath.
