HK$150 million bust is Hong Kong’s biggest liquid meth seizure at airport in 2 decades
- The drug was hidden inside 1,920 bottles labelled ‘coconut oil’ shipped from Mexico
- Customs officials said their investigation suggested the 230kg haul was bound for countries including Australia, where it would be worth 6 times as much
Hong Kong customs officials have confiscated more than HK$150 million (US$19.3 million) worth of liquid methamphetamine disguised as coconut oil and flown into the city from Mexico – the agency’s largest airborne seizure of the drug in two decades.
Superintendent Lee Man-lok of the department’s drug unit said the investigation suggested the 230kg haul was destined for countries such as Australia, where its value would have been six times greater.
“We will carry out a follow-up investigation and exchange intelligence with mainland and overseas law enforcement agencies to track down the sender and final recipient of the consignment,” he said on Wednesday.
It was the second air consignment of liquid meth, also known as Ice, mailed from Mexico and seized at the airport in the past two months.
On July 20, customs officers uncovered 145kg of liquid Ice with an estimated street value of HK$80 million in a shipment of avocado oil from Mexico.
