A Hong Kong couple were arrested on Saturday after their three-year-old daughter’s school raised the alarm about a possible case of child abuse.

The girl, who has been sent to hospital, had suffered injuries to all four limbs, and there were obvious bruises and wounds on her scalp, left ear and left cheek, police said in a statement.

Officers first received a report from a social worker at the school on Tuesday, saying they believed the girl had been assaulted in a flat in Tsuen Wan.

The girl’s 29-year-old father and 27-year-old mother were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child. They were later released on bail.

“Children’s rights are protected by law, and the maximum penalty for the offence of ‘ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person’ is 10 years’ imprisonment,” the statement said.
