Man dies after falling onto Hong Kong railway track at Tai Wo MTR station on East Rail line

  • Rail operator says security footage shows a man jumping onto the track area as a train arrives into Tai Wo station
  • Services on the northern section of the East Rail line partially suspended on Saturday morning, but fully restored in the afternoon

A 66-year-old man died on Saturday after falling onto the track at a Hong Kong railway station, leaving services partially suspended.

Police received a report at 10.30am of a person dropping onto the northern section of the railway at Tai Wo station, which sits on the East Rail line connecting Hung Hom and Lo Wu.

The MTR Corporation said its security footage showed a man jumping onto the track area as a northbound train entered the station.

The rail operator said the driver stopped the train immediately while the station manager activated the emergency stop to prevent other services entering into the station.

Police said the man, surnamed Lee, was found trapped under a carriage and certified dead at the scene.

Between 10.30am and 11.45am, East Rail line services between Fanling and Tai Po Market were halted, while those linking Tai Po Market and Hung Hom were running every eight minutes. Services between Sheung Shui and Fanling were operating at 15-minute intervals.

Services started returning to normal after 11.45am, with usual running times restored across the entire northbound rail link in the afternoon.

Earlier this month, a 74-year-old man, surnamed Tang, was suspected of taking his own life after falling onto the tracks at Mong Kok East MTR station of the East Rail line. He was certified dead at the scene.
