A citywide hunt is under way in Hong Kong for the driver of a car that knocked down a cyclist, travelled for another 2km before slamming into a central divider and flipping over in Tseung Kwan O in the early hours of Wednesday.

The 19-year-old cyclist sustained injuries to his head and legs in the collision outside Hong Kong Velodrome Park on Po Hong Road shortly before 12.30am.

Police said the car sped off after ramming into the bicycle. The cyclist was sent to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for treatment.

The car was later found abandoned on Pak Shing Kok Road near the junction with Wan Po Road, having crashed into a central divider. The location is about 2km away from the site of the collision with the cyclist.

A passing motorist found the overturned car and called police.

The force said the male driver had climbed out of the hit-and-run vehicle and fled before officers arrived.

“In the vehicle, officers found a 40cm-long knife, a 36cm retractable baton and a pair of gloves,” a police spokesman said.

Police believe the car ran out of control while making a turn from Wan Po Road into Pak Shing Kok Road.

As of noon, no arrest had been made in connection with the case, and investigations were ongoing.
