Police seized about 300kg of fireworks hidden in a shipping container on a remote hillside in northern Hong Kong on Tuesday night.

The haul had an estimated street value of HK$350,000 (US$44,915), with officers investigating whether the goods were intended to be sold illegally for the Lunar New Year celebrations in the city next month, according to police.

A police spokesman said that after receiving a tip-off, detectives from the Yuen Long anti-triad squad launched an investigation and raided the abandoned container in Tin Shui Wai off Tin Tsz Road at around 11pm.

The container appeared to have been renovated, with police saying that it might have been previously used as an office.

A law enforcement source said that initial reports had suggested the boxes of fireworks were moved into the container recently, adding that officers were working to determine how the haul got into the city.
