Hong Kong police arrested an elderly man on suspicion of strangling his daughter to death in his Mong Kok flat before daybreak on Monday, marking the city’s third murder case in two weeks.

The attack took place in the pair’s home in Hoi Wen House at Hoi Fu Court on Hoi Ting Road after the 32-year-old woman beat the 70-year-old man with an umbrella, according to police.

A police source said the woman had been suffering from mental illness for more than five years, and would often beat her father and refused to go to bed.

The incident came to light when the father called his ex-wife, who filed a police report at 6.10am. Emergency personnel were then sent to the scene.

A police spokesman said the woman was certified dead by paramedics at the scene. After inquiries, officers arrested the elderly man on suspicion of murder.

The source added the investigation suggested the father had allegedly strangled his daughter to death with his hands after she had hit him with an umbrella.

The flat was cordoned off by police as officers collected evidence inside.

The suspect, who was hooded and handcuffed, was escorted out of the building and brought to a police vehicle at about 8am. He was then taken to Mong Kok police station, where he was being held for questioning.

Detectives from the Mong Kok district crime squad are investigating the case.

A spokesman for the Social Welfare Department said the family was not connected to any cases they had been handling, but added they had contacted the victim’s mother to provide support after the incident.

The incident marks the city’s third murder case in two weeks.
