Police are investigating whether a minibus or a taxi sped through a red light just before the two vehicles collided at a Hong Kong intersection on Tuesday, leaving seven people injured.

Emergency personnel were called in at about 7.15am when the crash occurred at the junction of Argyle Street and Yim Po Fong Street in Mong Kok.

The green minibus slammed into the left side of the taxi, which was pushed into roadside railings by the impact of the crash.

The minibus driver, 67, who was uninjured, told local media at the scene that he was in a state of shock and could not remember what exactly had happened.

“I vaguely remember that when my vehicle was in the road junction, the taxi was right in front of my minibus before the collision,” he said.

A police spokesman said the 54-year-old taxi driver, his female fare and five minibus passengers had suffered minor injuries in the incident.

All of the injured – two men and five women, aged 25 to 61 – were taken to Kwong Wah Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

According to the force, the two drivers had both passed breathalyser tests and no arrests were made. Officers from the Kowloon West traffic unit are investigating the case.

The number of serious traffic accidents in the city dropped 4.6 per cent to 1,824 in 2021, down from 1,912 the year before.
