Hong Kong police arrested a 32-year-old man before daybreak on Wednesday, hours after a suspected triad member was allegedly bundled into a car and abducted in Mong Kok.

The 33-year-old victim, suspected to be a Sun Yee On triad member, was driven to Wong Tai Sin, where he was freed after being pushed out of the vehicle, according to the force. The two locations are about 7km apart.

A police source said an initial investigation suggested a money dispute involving tens of thousands of dollars might have sparked the alleged abduction.

The victim was stopped by three men on Portland Street in Mong Kok at about 7.30pm on Tuesday. He was then pushed into a car which sped off before police arrived.

Officers found a pair of glasses belonging to the victim at the scene.

Police spotted the 33-year-old when he returned to the same street about three hours later to retrieve his glasses.

He claimed he had been driven to Wong Tai Sin where he was released, according to the source. He was uninjured in the incident.

Officers arrested the suspect at 3.45am on Argyle Street in Mong Kok. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was still being held for questioning and had not been charged.

Police said officers were searching for another three men, aged 30 to 40, in connection with the case.

Officers from the Mong Kok anti-triad squad are investigating the case.

Last year, police handled 1,888 reports of triad-related crimes, up 7.2 per cent from 1,761 in 2020.
