Man arrested for murder after being caught with girlfriend’s quilt-wrapped body on Hong Kong street

Police have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of killing his girlfriend after he was spotted dragging a wheel board loaded with her quilt-wrapped body along a street in northern Hong Kong on Friday morning.

The grisly incident came to light when joggers saw what appeared to be legs protruding from the rolled-up quilt on Tin Ha Road in Tin Shui Wai at about 6am.

“As I was jogging, I saw him dragging [a wheel board]. He then stopped and it seemed he was exhausted and unable to roll it any further,” a female passer-by said while recalling her encounter with the suspect.

“When he was sorting out [the things on the wheel board], I saw a pair of legs. I then asked my husband to call police.”

The woman, who only gave her surname as Ying, said the suspect did not appear to panic. “He looked at us and continued to drag the wheel board.”

She said when officers arrived at the scene, he was ordered to step aside before being handcuffed.

Police said they believed the woman, 30, was killed in the man’s rented flat in Galore Garden – a low-rise housing estate – off Tin Ha Road and the body was loaded on the wheel board and dragged for about 500 metres before it was discovered.

Online footage shows some joggers and cyclists going past the suspect without noticing anything suspicious.

As of Friday night, the housing estate was still being cordoned off as officers were inside the flat gathering evidence.

Emergency responders were deployed after police received a report from a passer-by, according to the force.

A police spokesman said the man was intercepted and the woman was certified dead at the scene by paramedics.

“The head of the deceased was wrapped with cling film and her hands were bound with nylon rope,” he said.

A source said there was a single-seat sofa on the wheel board and the victim was found wrapped in a quilt.

“The body was wrapped with adhesive tape from shoulder to leg,” he said, adding that a 1cm-long wound was found on the back of the victim’s head.

The source said there were bruises on the victim’s right shoulder and hands, while burn marks were found on both of her legs.

Officers then arrested the 25-year-old man for murder. He was being held for questioning and had not been charged.

Another source said an initial investigation showed the suspect and the woman were lovers and he was also her former workmate.

The suspect, surnamed Ng, who is unemployed, reportedly moved into the Tin Shui Wai flat recently from Tuen Mun.

At about 9am, police cordoned off the area and a blue tent was put up to cover the body as detectives carried out an investigation.

Officers from Yuen Long district crime squad are handling the case.

Last year, police handled 23 murder reports across the city. There were 22 cases in 2020.
