More than 10 police officers in bulletproof vests stormed a room at a guest house in Hong Kong to rescue a debt-ridden man and arrest three alleged abductors on Monday night. As intelligence indicated that the suspects could be armed, two of the officers drew their pistols for precautionary measures during the raid on Temple Street in Yau Ma Tei, a source familiar with the case said on Tuesday. Inside the room, police seized a model gun along with 110 grams of cannabis buds. The confiscated drug was worth about HK$12,500 (US$1,607). In Hong Kong, imitation firearms can refer to models and toy guns, airguns or guns used in war games. Possession of imitation firearms is punishable by up to two years in jail. Six ‘suspected triad members’ arrested over attack on 43-year-old man in Hong Kong According to the force, the 52-year-old male victim was threatened with what appeared to be a pistol and then bundled into a car in Tsuen Wan on Sunday night before being held captive in one of the rooms in the Yau Ma Tei guest house. Superintendent Alan Chung, head of the Kowloon West regional crime unit, said the man was involved in a dispute over HK$300,000 in gambling debts with one of the suspects. The investigation showed that while being held in the guest house, the victim was hit on the head with the pistol-like object. Officers, acting on intelligence received, raided the venue at about 6pm on Monday, breaking into the room and rescuing the victim while subduing the three suspects. The victim, suffering from facial injuries, was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. Between January and October this year, police handled 7,290 reports of violent crime, down 8.6 per cent from 7,980 cases logged in the same period last year. Local authorities seized 2,004kg (4,418lbs) of cannabis in the first 10 months of this year, up 18.7 per cent from 1,689kg in the same period last year.
