A Hong Kong resident was among five people killed on Friday in an Australian state’s deadliest car crash in a decade.

Police in the state of Victoria on Saturday said the accident took place outside the town of Strathmerton at around 2.30pm, when a 29-year-old man driving a Mercedes-Benz allegedly ran a give way sign and hit a Nissan Navara.

The driver of the second vehicle lost control and crashed into an oncoming milk tanker, killing all five people in the Nissan Navara.

The man behind the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz, and his 20-year-old passenger, sustained minor injuries. The driver was brought to court after he tested positive for traces of cannabis, police said.

An Immigration Department spokeswoman said it was handling a case involving the accident and would immediately follow up with the Office of the Commissioner of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, and the country’s consulate in Melbourne.
