Hong Kong police arrest driver, 29, linked to manslaughter of elderly security guard in Sha Tin after suspected fight over parking fees

  • Victim was found unconscious in car park and rushed to hospital where he later died

Hong Kong police on Sunday arrested a man over the death of a 69-year-old security guard in Sha Tin, revealing that the pair had a physical confrontation over parking fee payment and cannabis was found in the suspect’s car.

The suspect, 29, surnamed Yue, was detained over manslaughter and possession of dangerous drugs.

The force received a report at 12.38am that the victim, surnamed Yuen, was found unconscious at a car park in Jat Min Chuen, a public estate in Sha Tin.

He was sent to Prince of Wales Hospital and confirmed dead at 1.07am.

“In our investigation, police found the security guard had argued and was involved in a physical confrontation with a private car driver at 12.34am due to issues related to parking payments,” Assistant District Commander Wong Wai-yin said.

“Officers then searched the car and found around two grams of cannabis.”

Police said they believed the suspect had attacked the security guard with his bare hands, but a postmortem examination would be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.

Officers from Sha Tin’s district crime squad were investigating the case, the force said, urging anyone who had relevant information to call them at 3661 2758.

In Hong Kong, possession of dangerous drugs is punishable by imprisonment for up to seven years and a HK$1 million (US$127,400) fine.

Several cases involving the deaths of security guards have occurred in Hong Kong over the years. A guard was slashed in the neck by his former colleague at an MTR station in 2020.

In 2019, an unemployed man was arrested for allegedly attacking and killing a security guard during a break-in at a restaurant.

Another security officer was stabbed to death by his colleague at a water treatment facility in Sha Tin in 2018. In 2016, a transport worker beat a guard to death in Tin Shui Wai.
