Hong Kong police have seized cocaine and cannabis with an estimated market value of about HK$650 million, the largest haul this year, with some of the drugs hidden in boxes of frozen fish in a bid to avoid detection.

In a three-day operation ending on Friday, the force’s narcotics bureau impounded 592kg of suspected cocaine and 91.2kg of suspected cannabis buds, and arrested four men on suspicion of drug trafficking.

“The cannabis flower buds seized this time were stored among frozen fish,” Chief Inspector Charm Yiu-kwong told a press briefing on Friday.

“We believe the drug cartel used this method … in an attempt to cover up the odour of marijuana with the frozen fish’s pungent smell.”

Senior Inspector Law Kai-yin said the bureau conducted an ambush operation against the drug syndicate on Wednesday at two industrial buildings in Kwun Tong, on How Ming Street and Wai Yip Street.
