Hong Kong police arrested a 58-year-old woman on Thursday on suspicion of animal cruelty after a pigeon was allegedly hurled to its death at a public housing estate in Tseung Kwan O.
Officers were called to Hau Tak Estate on Po Ning Road shortly before 11am after receiving a report from a passer-by, with the caller claiming a woman had thrown the bird to the ground, the force said.
Officers discovered the dead pigeon outside the estate’s Tak Chak House.
After a preliminary investigation, police arrested the woman for animal cruelty – an offence punishable by up to three years in jail and a HK$200,000 (US$25,538) fine.
Detectives from the Tseung Kwan O criminal investigation unit are following up on the case.
Police on May 17 arrested a man, 66, for allegedly breaking a wild pigeon’s wings at King Lam Estate in the same district.
