Hong Kong minibus driver, 26, arrested after vehicle knocks down and kills elderly woman in Ngau Tau Kok

A Hong Kong minibus driver, 26, has been arrested after his vehicle knocked down and killed an elderly woman in a busy district in the city.

Police on Saturday said the incident happened at 11pm the night before on Wai Yip Street in Ngau Tau Kok towards Mong Kok, near the Kai Fuk Road flyover.

The minibus hit a 65-year-old woman, who sustained serious leg injuries and was rushed unconscious to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong. She was certified dead at 11.54pm.

Police detained the driver for questioning after arresting him on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.

The force is calling for witnesses or those with information on the case to contact officers via the hotlines 36610264 or 36610277.

In April, police arrested the 58-year-old driver of a tourist bus over dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm after the coach hit a 67-year-old mainland Chinese tourist in To Kwa Wan. The man sustained scratches on his limbs and was in a semi-conscious state when being sent to a hospital.

Official figures show 27 people were killed in traffic accidents in the first three months of the year. Last year, 90 people died in 89 fatal crashes.
