Hong Kong anti-triad police undercover operation foils knife attack plan

  • Plain-clothes officers arrest two men in early morning operation outside shopping centre in Tseung Kwan O
  • Knife and car seized as part of operations, while two detained suspects are being questioned by police
Hong Kong police’s anti-triad squad foiled a knife attack plot on Tuesday with the arrest of two men.

The force said officers from the organised crime and triad bureau, acting on intelligence, arrested two men on Chui Ling Road in Tseung Kwan O at about 7am.

“Police suspect the two men planned to harm someone,” the force said.

A video posted online showed one of the suspects pinned to the ground by plain-clothes officers and handcuffed outside a shopping centre on Chui Ling Road before being put in an unmarked police van.

The footage also showed at least 10 plain-clothes officers at the scene, with some seizing a knife.

Police said officers also impounded a car during the operation.

Hong Kong police arrest 27-year-old man after woman slashed in underpass

A source familiar with the case said one of the suspects was a 19-year-old man from the Philippines, the holder of a recognisance form – temporary immigration papers that allow people to remain in the city, but not work.

The other was an unemployed Pakistani man with a Hong Kong identity card.

The two men were in police custody for questioning on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the investigation would continue and did not rule out more arrests.

The news came as the force stepped up patrols across the city after a string of violent attacks and knife crimes last month.

Investigators said the woman, who suffered serious injuries, had earlier laid the man off.

Two officers opened fire on a Lexus car and arrested its driver on June 10 after a bungled escape attempt on Princess Margaret Road in Ho Man Tin that ended with a Mercedes-Benz and a police vehicle rammed.

Two women were stabbed to death at Plaza Hollywood shopping centre in Diamond Hill on June 2. A man, 39, has been charged with the murders.

Police handled 151 reports of wounding across the city between January and March this year, up 8.6 per cent on the 139 cases logged in the same period in 2022.
