  • Families of the men informed and offered support, according to hospital spokesman

Hong Kong police launched an investigation on Saturday after a psychiatric hospital found signs of injury on the genitals of four patients with mental disabilities.

A spokesman for Castle Peak Hospital in Tuen Mun on Friday said a report to police was made the day before, following healthcare staff discovering evidence of assault as they carried out nursing procedures on the four male patients.

“The patients were suspected of being assaulted. [The hospital] is very concerned about the incident,” the spokesman said.

He added the hospital was investigating if the injuries were linked to another male patient, who had been in restraints, but had managed to remove them.

Police on Saturday listed the case as assault occasioning actual bodily harm. No arrests have been made so far.

The four patients were taken to Tuen Mun Hospital for examination. Three were discharged after treatment and one was hospitalised, but said to be in stable condition.

Castle Peak Hospital had informed the families of the patients and was prepared to offer help if needed, according to the spokesman.

“The hospital will immediately strengthen inspection and supervision of patient activities and take all feasible measures to ascertain that patients are treated in an appropriate hospital environment,” he said.
