A Hong Kong driver narrowly escaped being seriously injured after losing control of his Tesla car and crashing into about 10 stacked pallets near a wholesale fruit market in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to police, the accident took place at 2.19am near the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market on Waterloo Road at the junction with Ferry Street.

“An initial investigation showed the driver suddenly felt dizzy, which caused him to lose control of his car,” a spokesman said.

Emergency personnel were called in after multiple witnesses reported the incident to the force.

One caller told police the car had crashed into about 10 pallets piled up with boxes of fruit, the force said.

A photo posted online showed the car, with its airbags deployed, had mounted the pallets, scattering some papayas along the road.

The driver, a 23-year-old man, suffered scratches to his right arm and was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital for treatment.

The police spokesman said the driver passed a breathalyser test and no arrests were made. Officers from the Kowloon West traffic unit are following up on the case.

Between January and June this year, 53 people died and 403 people suffered serious injuries in traffic accidents across the city. Last year, 90 people died in 89 fatal crashes.
