Prison officers pepper-sprayed an inmate when he attacked a staff member after a disciplinary hearing at a Hong Kong correctional centre, authorities revealed on Monday.

The staff member was said to have suffered a nose injury as a result of the incident, which happened at Tai Lam Correctional Institution in Tuen Mun in the New Territories, just before 11.30am.

The Correctional Services Department said a 27-year-old prisoner attacked the officer outside the adjudication room after he had been to a disciplinary hearing.

“Officers at the scene immediately stopped the assailant and applied OC foam [also known as pepper spray] to subdue him after repeated warnings were ignored,” the department said.
