Hong Kong police have arrested eight suspected triad members in connection with a brawl at a nightclub in Yau Ma Tei.

The eight men, aged 28 to 53, were detained on suspicion of fighting in a public place, the force on Wednesday said.

According to police, the fight was caused by a dispute over trivial matters and involved about 10 people at the nightclub on Nathan Road on Saturday.

A source familiar with the case said an initial investigation revealed several patrons at the club, who were suspected 14K triad members, got drunk and caused a nuisance on the premises.

The fight erupted when bouncers, believed to have Sun Yee On triad backgrounds, tried to intervene, he said.

Two men were injured in the incident and taken to hospital for treatment, while the others fled before police arrived.

After identifying those involved and gathering evidence, detectives from the Yau Tsim anti-triad squad arrested eight men, including the two injured men, in a series of raids on Monday and Tuesday.

The suspects were still being held for questioning as of Wednesday morning.

Police said the investigation was ongoing and further arrests were possible.

In the first six months of this year, police handled 912 triad-related crimes across the city, an increase of 7.2 per cent from 851 cases logged in the same period in 2022.
