Hong Kong police arrest 3 after man, 48, fatally stabbed in taxi

Hong Kong police have arrested a mainland Chinese visitor on her birthday on suspicion of fatally stabbing her alleged lover in a New Territories taxi during a dispute over their extramarital relationship, the Post has learned.

The suspect’s female friend, a 37-year-old Hong Kong resident, was also apprehended less than four hours after the incident on suspicion of aiding and abetting her, a source familiar with the case said.

The attack took place at a taxi rank in Shui Pin Wai Estate on Ma Miu Road in Yuen Long shortly after 4am on Wednesday.

Basil Tang Yick-kay, assistant Yuen Long district police commander, said the trio were taking a taxi after spending time together nearby when a fight broke out.

An insider said a preliminary investigation revealed that the two women had jumped into the rear passenger seat of the taxi and were later joined by the 48-year-old man.

The woman, who turned 36 on Wednesday, was said to have a two-way permit – a mainland travel document used to enter the city. Her 29-year-old husband was also arrested in Tin Shui Wai at 7pm for allegedly aiding and abetting her, the insider said.

“The taxi driver overheard the man and one of the women arguing over relationship issues before the two women jumped out of the vehicle,” the insider said.

He added the women left the cab, got into another taxi and were driven off.

The taxi driver noticed the male passenger was still sitting in the back seat of the cab but he was motionless, according to the insider. The 54-year-old driver then called police at around 4.08am.

“An initial examination shows that the victim was stabbed in the right and left sides of his chest and he was unconscious when emergency personnel arrived,” the source said.

The victim was rushed to Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long, but he was declared dead at about 5.45am.

Police arrested the woman from the mainland at Tin Ching Estate in Tin Shui Wai, about 4km from Shui Pin Wai Estate, 1½ hours later. The city resident was detained in the same estate at about 8.15am.

The mainland woman was arrested on suspicion of murder as police investigations suggested she had been armed with a knife before the attack.

The source said investigations found that the mainland woman was the man’s lover and that they both were married to other people.

The three suspects were still being questioned by police on Wednesday night.

Detectives from the Yuen Long criminal investigation unit are handling the case.

Police handled 26 reports of murder between January and October, compared with 25 cases logged over the same period in 2022.
