Hong Kong police have arrested a 33-year-old babysitter in connection with the suspected abuse of a nine-month-old girl who fell into a coma in hospital.
Police on Saturday said Tuen Mun Hospital made a report at 8.18pm the previous evening, suspecting child abuse after the baby suffered a blood clot on the brain and fell into a coma.

“After preliminary investigations, we believe the baby had been subject to maltreatment while in the care of the babysitter,” a police spokesman said.
“Police investigations are still going on.”
The woman, surnamed Fung, was arrested on Saturday for suspected child abuse.
The Hospital Authority said the baby was in a critical condition.

In the first half of 2023, police recorded a 29 per cent year-on-year rise in child abuse cases, partly due to the post-pandemic resumption of face-to-face classes in schools.
Over the six months, the number of physical abuse cases involving children jumped to 359, or 25.5 per cent more than the same corresponding period in 2022.
Among those incidents, 268 involved family members and 17 were linked to domestic helpers.
