Hong Kong police arrested a 71-year-old taxi driver in connection with a hit-and-run just hours after his cab allegedly hit a 65-year-old man and sped away early on Tuesday morning.

The vehicle struck the man on Queen’s Road West near the junction with Woo Hop Street in Western district soon after 2.30am, police said.

“A taxi hit the victim as he was crossing the road,” a source familiar with the case said. “An initial investigation suggested it did not stop and left the scene.”

The insider said a passer-by saw the incident, noted down the licence plate number and called the force.

The victim, who suffered head injuries and was unconscious, was taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam, where he underwent surgery. As of midday, he was listed as being in a critical condition.

Several hours later, police arrested a 71-year-old taxi driver in connection with the hit-and-run after officers from Hong Kong Island’s traffic unit located him at his Chai Wan flat.

The source said officers also found his taxi parked near his home, and the vehicle had minor damage to its front.
