A team leader behind a 2019 bomb plot to kill police officers during a Hong Kong anti-government protest march has pleaded guilty to crowdfunding more than HK$4 million (US$511,430) from supporters to buy arms and ammunition to carry out the attack.

Wong Chun-keung, a former construction worker, admitted in the High Court on Tuesday to a conspiracy to provide or collect property to commit terrorist acts between August 1 and December 9, 2019.

A Telegram channel named “Dragonteam” was launched by Wong to appeal to subscribers for cash, the summary of facts presented in court said.

The group marked its debut in November 2019 with a message on the channel that read: “We would take the bullet for you all … but we need support from you.”

The prosecution said the channel laid the groundwork for a plot by Wong and his team to plant two bombs during a march in Wan Chai on December 8 that year.
