Eighteen bottles of spirits and HK$100,000 (US$12,780) in cash were stolen from a dim sum restaurant at a shopping centre in Hong Kong’s Sham Shui Po in the early hours of Monday.

The break-in was discovered at around 7am when staff returned to work at the first-floor restaurant in the Pak Tin Commercial Centre at Pak Tin Estate. The employees last left the premises just before midnight.

“A safe at the restaurant’s cashier counter was broken open and HK$100,000 was stolen,” a source familiar with the case said.

The insider said the 18 stolen liquor bottles included XO cognac and Mao-tai, a type of Chinese white wine, and had an estimated value of HK$21,000.

Detectives from the Sham Shui Po criminal investigation unit are checking surveillance camera footage for evidence.

Police were also called in to investigate a separate burglary that involved the theft of HK$50,000 in valuables from a ground-floor shop on Cameron Road in Tsim Sha Tsui.
