A Hong Kong chef has been sentenced to 2½ years in prison for an escape from police custody after he swapped identities with another inmate who had been given bail.
The District Court on Wednesday heard that Chan Shu-wa, 38, and accomplice Lam King-ho, 26, met in a detention cell in West Kowloon Court after they attended separate hearing on April 10 last year.
Chan was denied bail, but Lam was granted release.
The prosecution summary of facts said Chan swapped his identification document and wristbands that had Lam’s inmate number on them before he was passed on to four officers.
None of the officers noticed that Chan’s face did not match Lam’s identity card.
Lam, who had been charged with assault, was promised a reward of HK$20,000 (US$2,556) but never got the cash.
